Sony Institution Presentation Feedback

WWW:
Spoke clearly and presented well to the class
Did not always read of the board
Good questions at the start of presentation to get the class engaged

EBI:
The right presentation was used
We had a plenary for the class at the end
Our group communicated more in terms of organisation

My Opinion:

I thought our presentation was not to the best standard as the wrong one was used, despite this i feel that i made an effort to engage with the class by speaking about Sony and stating facts that were not in our presentation to make the presentation less boring.

Django Unchained - Enter The Dragon: Analysis

The film Django Unchained is set in 1858 in an era where people from an African ethnicity are considered to be slaves in the western world. This scene focuses on the main character from the film called Django.  The scene starts of with a medium shot of Django who is dressed in a very expensive suit with his back faced towards the camera, shouts out someones name who can be seen in the distance. Django shouted his name in an aggressive manner which tells us he is angry. The next scene is a medium shot of a white man who is dressed in working clothes with his back towards the screen which indicates he is busy doing something, there is a black woman who is tied to a tree resembling slavery and that this man that is in power of her. The man turns around to oppose Django. The next shot is a long shot of Django showing us that he is standing in a strong stance and his legs are shoulder width apart representing his strong nature, this is also emphasised by the sudden increase in powerful non-diegetic music. There are two quick scenes after this of another white man that looks at Django and the black woman on the tree turns her head around to see what is going on. Django walks slowly towards the man that he has called and says 'remember me' meaning that they have met before. The man does not say anything and Django takes out his gun and shoots him in the chest. The scene then changes to the man speechless before he drops to the floor. This means that Django at this moment is a powerful individual. The other man who was previously shown in a quick shot tries to get a gun out to kill Django however Django reaches out to get a whip from the floor which was next to the man he just killed meaning that this whip was used to whip the black people that these people had enslaved. This shot had been done in slow motion so the that the audience could see more detail of the scene and to emphasise how serious the scene is. Django then brutally whips the man several times meaning that he has a lot of anger inside of him. There is also a quick shot of the black woman on the tree that is looking at Django and she looks very shocked. She probably cannot believe that the people that own her are being killed by a black man. The parallel non-diegtic music slows down after most of the violence has stopped. There is then a close shot of the floor and Django bends down to pick up a gun. He then asks everybody witnessing this if they want to see something. The scene then changes to the point of view of the man that just got whipped and is now lying on the floor, so he is looking up at Django. This shot was chosen at this time to make Django look powerful and of a superior nature as he also has a gun in his hand. The scene changes to a long shot of Django and the man on the floor and Django starts to shoot the man on the floor multiple times guaranteeing death. There is then another medium shot of another young black girl tied to a tree looking back at Django not believing what she is witnessing. The scene then switches to the point of view of the man getting shot and we now see Django shooting more times. The scene then changes to a long shot of a Django's accompany who is riding a horse towards the camera. The non-diegetic music has stopped and we can now hear the dietetic music of birds singing and the horse galloping. The man asks Django who the men he shot were and Django tells him. The man then asks Django where the other man that needed to be shot was and asks if he was positive if he knew. Django did not know what the word positive meant meaning that he is not very educated probably because he came from a background of slavery himself and could not receive any education. The next scene is a scene of the man that needs to be shot riding on his horse, Djangos accompany shoots him. The next scene is a scene of white flowers that eventually get sprayed with the blood of the man that just got shot, followed by a scene of the horse going past the camera and the man falling of the horse onto flowers.

The fact that Django is a black man dressed in better clothes that the white people in this scene already gives the audience a indication that Django is of some superiority. As all of this occurs in the daytime and the sun is out and shining it resembles that Django and his accompany are not in fear at all.

Enter The Dragon (1973) stars Bruce Lee as the main character within the film. The camera throughout the scene mainly focuses on him as in most of the scenes he is in the centre of the screen. This clip mainly shows Bruce Lee fighting and taking on several men. Up to this point the director has used a lot of shots in which characters like the enemies are being introduced by them coming into the image supposed to the camera being directly focused on them. This is done because there are too many to separately introduce and as Bruce Lee is the centre of attraction the clip revolves around him. The scene starts with diegetic sound of an alarm going of and throughout the clip we hear sound effects used when Bruce Lee has attacked someone. These effects have been used to emphasise the damage done to the enemy. There are also scenes that contain slow motion in which the viewer can see Bruce Lee's precise choice of attack and movement that makes the viewer feel more interested and it also brings an atmosphere of tension. There are close ups to Bruce Lees face after he has dealt with an opponent which shows us his facial expression. From the slow close ups the camera often quickly zooms out to capture the action of the surroundings. During the slow motion shots there is a sudden increase in the non diegetic music, there are very sharp chords being played that represent a sound of pain. This music has probably been used to create a similar atmosphere of fear that is being acted out in the scene.

Django Unchained had a few key characters to introduce and the method of introduction included slow motion close up medium shots that had a lot of emphasis on the introduction of a new character in the scene whereas in Enter The Dragon there was only one key character who had a very quick introduction and every scene was very fast paced; most of the emphasis was on the key character and his actions whereas in Django Unchained the scenes were of a slower place and the viewer needed to pay more attention to listen to the words being said by the actors. In Enter The Dragon there was a lot more action however it lacked the emotional connection to the viewer whereas in Django there was a strong issue of racism and slavery which could make the viewer feel more concerned about the scene. Both clips however used a range of camerawork techniques that served purpose to create the atmosphere parallel to the scenes.

An extract edited in a distinctive way : Tyler The Creator Ft. Frank Ocean - She

The music video starts of with a still image of  a 'GOBLIN' logo. This may tell us that the artists represent a brand called goblin or could even connote that the viewer is about to watch something scary. The video then starts with a close up shot of a road sign saying 'nil bog' which is 'goblin' backwards, now indicating the video does represent a brand. There is also diegetic sound as we can hear cars go past. In the same scene the camera zooms to the right hand side of the road showing a long shot of three men gambling, one of the men starts to sing, indicating he is one of the artists in the song (Frank Ocean). The scene then changes to a close shot of the man rolling dice and holding money in his hand that makes it clear he is gambling. The scene then changes to a woman moving into a house, and we can see the that the three men are looking at them. This gives us a indication that the song is about this woman. The scene then changes to a close up of her face and she is smiling at Frank Ocean meaning that she is happy to be moving in near him, or suggesting that they may have had a previous relationship of some sort. The girl is then escorted into the house by an elder man. The scene then changes to a shot of the artist and the woman in bed however he pushes her to the side and looks out the window and we can now tell that time has passed because it is now dark. He also sees this man in a balaclava and therefore rings the police describing that he has seen some kind of goblin. there is a slide scene that shows a policeman listening to him on the phone. The next scenes show that the girl is angry because the man is not with her now and she even seems to be angry with her dad, she lies down in her room alone with the door shut meaning that she needs her own time. She eventually falls asleep and the man seen at the window with the balaclava has appeared and is now also rapping indicating he is the other artist (Tyler The Creator). He then reveals his face raps the song to this woman even though she is sleeping and cannot hear him, while doing this he also smells some of her clothes and tells her to meet him by the lake by writing the message on her window. He has probably avoided waking her up because she would freak out and cause an uproar within the household. The next scene is a 180 degree pan that shows Tyler running out the house, so fast that he trips to a wall where frank is sitting down near some flowers observing what is happening. The scene then changes to a daytime of a shot of Tyler riding his bike really fast with some of his friends behind him, this switches to a shot of the woman riding her bike calmly with her friends, indicating they are both going to the lake. The scene then changes to both of them at the lake until the music stops and tyler realises it is a dream. Tyler and his friends get arrested which could be a result of Frank calling the police earlier. The scene next shows Tyler in the police car eventually being brought to the neighbourhood he was stalking this woman. The police men get into a brawl with an elder man that could be the woman's dad, This is a distraction so tyler starts to speak to the woman and now she looks unimpressed until he compliments her, there is nothing else to say and they are both smiling and Tyler is looking at the camera. The video finishes by zooming out into a television frame making out that all of this was a short film. We can then see the same woman watching this on her sofa. The camera then slowly zooms out to show Tyler again in his balaclava looking down at her. Throughout the video the lighting was tinted slightly blue in the daytime to give us a feeling of gloom. whereas other shots were mostly at night or inside with very dim lighting.

Overall this music video has amazing cinematography, the video in various scenes makes the viewer intrigued by the way scenes have been moved on the the other. The eccentric concepts in the video also make it appealing to viewers. We can also relate that the 'Goblin' logo and 'nilbog' sign post are parallel with the theme and concept of the whole video. The video also leaves the viewer on the edge due to the cliff-hanger at the end when we find out that all of this was being watched on a television by the same people in the film.

50 Cent Advert Analysis

The colour in this photo is in black and white, which makes the advert very simple, these colours could be used to represent the dull past that the rapper 50 Cent has come from, indicating that Reebok want the celebrities lifestyle to influence the brand in this particular advert. The denotation of this advert is that it is black and white and has a serious message, This connotes that the brand may also want to be taken seriously.

50 Cent's Pose is very serious, he is making eye contact with the viewer which connotes that he is fearless. He is wearing a chain that connotes that he is wealthy indicating that Reebok is not a cheap brand and that it is of some quality.  The pose is parallel to the quote that is also present in the advert.

The advert features low key lighting suggesting that the celebrity comes from a dark background and past. In contrast to this the quote is in white. As the quote says "I am what I am" It could connote that the colour white has been used to give the quote a positive meaning, even though everything is in darkness.

The composition of this photo connotes that he has overcome his criminal record as he his now successful enough to be on a Reebok advert. The company has used a contrast of himself next to his criminal record indicating that he has overcome negative things in the past.

A preferred reading could suggest that this advert would appeal to people that 50 Cent has influenced like teenagers or music fans whom are most likely to buy and support the products in association with 50 Cent. A negotiated reason may be that a viewer may find the message more important than the celebrities endorsement and is buying or agreeing with the product for that reason. The oppositional reading could be that Reebok is promoting gang culture and is encouraging people with a criminal record to be buying their products as directly behind the quotes there are images of criminal records and the celebrity himself also has a criminal record.

Media Consumption

Newspapers

I read The Metro when I am on the train as I find it is good to be aware of what is happening in the world and society and when I am on the train I find it is easy to read as there is not much else you can do. I generally read the articles that interest me. I always read about the headlines.

Television

I do not much television that often, however when i am interested in a particular programme or series then i will only watch televison for that purpose. I enjoy watching factual documentaries that i may be able to learn from.

Radio

I listen to the radio everyday to school and on my way back home from school in my car, I listen to Kiss 100 because I enjoy their playlists and presenters. When the music bores me, I change the station over to another station like Capital or BBC Radio 1 because their playlists consist of the same kind of music.

Cinema

In the past month I have seen grown ups 2 which I thought was very funny, I watched the film with a few friends. I do go to the cinema quite often when there is a film that is worth watching.

Internet

I use the internet everyday to access all types of things. I use the internet a lot from my phone as I find it is easier than starting up a computer, however I also do use the internet on my laptop at least once a day.

As a Media student I can engage myself with different types of media so I can be more aware of things that are going on around me. I can increase the amount of times I read magazines and I can also engage myself with sources that I do not engage myself with at the moment, for eg. On twitter I can start following verified news accounts that I do not follow at the moment.

Mise-en-Scene Analysis

Mise-En-Scene Analysis of Patch Adams Clip

Costume: This short clip within the film focuses on patients having a meeting with a doctor. The Patients are wearing clothes that are given by a hospital such as long gowns and loose clothing consisting of light colours like white, indicating that they are still undergoing treatment. The doctor is wearing a white coat meaning that he is also highly educated.

Actors: The actors in this scene present to us that they are mentally unstable, because they are not co-operating with the doctor. They are finding it amusing that there is a paralysed person in the same room as them and cannot take the issue seriously as they are laughing. Actor Robin Williams however is slightly more understanding and highlights to the Doctor that the paralysed patient may also have feelings. The Doctor plays a very serious role in this scene and cannot take the patients behaviour so he leaves and gets other workers to get the patients out the room. This connotes that the doctor does not have patience and cannot control patients to this level.

Props. In this scene they are in a bedroom with multiple beds and chairs, the paralysed patient is on a wheelchair, and around the room there are cages around the windows, which could suggest that these rooms are like prisons to patients.

Lighting: The lighting in this room is dark, and it could be said that the only source of light is the light from the windows, The colour of the walls and bed match the patients clothes. the room seems to be very gloomy.

Mise-En-Scene Analysis of Hunger Games clip

Costume: As this film is set in the future the costume varies from every individual in the film, this particular scene consists of competitors trying to impress the mass audiences, by their appearance, The main competitors are wearing black gowns that look very impressive and expensive that are on fire. The costumes in this film are very eccentric that connotes individuality and the fact that people actually care about their appearance.

Actors: This scene shows two commentators that seem to be amazed by the main competitors as they are screaming in praise of their costumes. There is also a Man with a long white beard that is the founder of the hunger games and he also seems to have his eye on the main competitors as their costume is so impressive. The main competitors themselves are standing tall a chariot pulled by two horses, which shows that they are courageous and look like they are well prepared to win the hunger games. The male also tries to hold the females hand because he thinks it will increase the audiences attraction towards them.

Props: The two commentators have microphones on their table meaning that they are talking to a very large audience. There is also a very large office in the scene which has a lot of computers suggesting there are a lot of people operating the event. There is a large stadium in which all of this is happening and a stand on which the chairman can speak on.

Lighting: The lighting in this clip varies from scene to scene. in all scenes however there is some form of bright light suggesting that there is a lot of excitement for this opening of the hunger games.

Mise-En-Scene Analysis of The Dark Knight clip

Costume: There is a lot of make up used in this film to resemble "Two Face" the make up is used so we can see the flesh underneath the humans skin. Also Batman is wearing a black costume as he is meant to be "The Dark Knight." The costumes in this clip are very dark

Actors: There is an act of fear from the policeman's family and son as they are experiencing a lot of evil. The Police man is begging Two Face not to point the gun at his son. Batman however seems to be fearless as he protects the son from Two Face. This scene is very serious as all the actors are speaking seriously or crying.

Props: Two Face is holding a gun in this scene that he shoots batman with and he also uses a coin to make decisions for him .

Lighting: The lighting in this scene is very dark, this may be used to resemble a sense of fear.
